Gunpowder is an important resource in Minecraft and having a Minecraft creeper farm is the most efficient way to get it. In this post, we’ll teach you how to build a Minecraft creeper farm.
What is the Use of Gunpowder in Minecraft?
Gunpowder is used for explosion-related recipes namely fire charge, firework rocket, firework star, and TNT. It is also used as an ingredient in splash potions in Minecraft.
How to Get Gunpowder in Minecraft?
You can get gunpowder by killing creepers. ghasts, and witches. Creepers and ghasts can drop 0-2 pieces of gunpowder upon death while witches can drop 0-6 pieces of gunpowder upon death. Exploding creepers won’t drop gunpowder. Looting can increase this by one per level, with a maximum of 5 gunpowder for creepers and ghasts, and by three per level, with a maximum of 15 gunpowder for witches.
You can also obtain gunpowder from Dungeons, Desert Temples or Village Chests and trade emeralds for gunpowder with wandering traders.
How to Build a Creeper Farm in Minecraft
A creeper is a common hostile mob that silently approaches players and explodes. Killing creepers manually without making them explode can be a bit tedious.
Rather than risking your life to get gunpowder, you can create a creeper farm in Minecraft instead. A creeper farm allows you to kill creepers without having to go near them. And since you don’t have to go after creepers, you can spend your time on more important things in your Minecraft world.
To make your creeper farm efficient, it is important to prevent the spawning of other mobs namely the zombies, skeletons, Endermans, and witches. This is because Minecraft spawns a finite number of mobs at any given time. If more other types of mobs spawn, it means there is less chance of spawning a creeper.
There is a way to prevent other mobs from spawning and this has something to do with the unique property of a creeper–that it needs less space to spawn. Zombies, skeletons, and witches require a full two blocks of height to spawn while Enderman needs three. A creeper can spawn in slightly less than two block-high space.
Using a trap door is the perfect way to prevent other mobs from spawning. When placed on 2 block-high ceilings, trapdoors lower the height to 1 13⁄16–the perfect depth to allow for creepers to spawn but not for the other four mentioned mobs.
Now that we have solved the problem of other mobs, there still remains one problem–the spiders. Since they are less than one block tall, they can’t be eliminated by trap doors. But there is a solution to this. Spiders spawn in a 3×3×1 space centered on an opaque block in Java edition and a 2x2x1 area in Bedrock. To stop them from spawning, make sure your platform has no flat 3×3 areas of solid blocks or 2×2 in Bedrock.
Now that you know how to keep other mobs out of the way, you can now begin building your creeper farm.
There are various ways you can build a creeper farm. It can be made as small or as big as you like. Vertical creeper farms are an efficient way to build farms.
In building a basic creeper farm, you need to build a platform in a diamond shape and place a dispenser in the middle. It is best to place down the dispenser first and then build out from there. Be sure that there are no 3 x 3 areas of solid blocks on your platform by placing down non-solid blocks in a pattern.
Then you would need to add another platform above. The distance between the platforms should be two blocks high. You can add as many as you want. The last layer should be wider as this would serve as the roof of your farm.
Add trapdoors on the ceilings of every layer. This will prevent zombies and other mobs from spawning in these areas.
Once you have all your layers in place, put the water buckets into the dispensers.
At the bottom of the farm, you need to build a killing and collection area. A flat slab of magma can be used to kill the Creepers through burn damage, then you can run hoppers and chests underneath to collect the drops.
On top of your farm, build a timing circuit running into redstone dust or a component like a dropper, lamp, or note block above the observer, to altenate between spawning mode and flushing mode on its own.

There are other ways to build a Minecraft creeper farm. Some designs include using cats or snow golems to scare creepers, campfires to kill the creepers and other variations.
Where is the best spot to build creeper farms? You can put your creeper farms near caves where creepers are more likely to spawn. Building a Minecraft creeper farm above an ocean is also an option as other hostile mobs can’t spawn inside water.
What are charged creepers? A charged creeper is one that has significantly increased explosion power. It is created when lightning strikes within four blocks of a normal creeper.
What item do spiders drop in Minecraft? Spiders drop spider eyes and/or string when killed. Spider Eyes are a brewing ingredient as well as a food item. Strings are used in crafting recipes such as bows, fishing rods and leads.
Do witches in Minecraft attack? Yes. Witches are hostile to players and will attack the latter with splash potions of harming.
What items do witches drop when slain? Witches will drop glass bottles, gunpowder, glowstone dust, redstone, spider’s eyes, sugar, and sticks when slain.
