PS5 will not make PS4 obsolete as PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan said PS4 will be supported 3-4 years after the PS5 launch until 2023-2024. PS4 games will be supported for a similar time, Shakedown: Hawaii a PS3 came out on August 20, 2020, 7 years after the PS4 release date.

Is PS4 Going To Be Obsolete?
PS4 games, consoles, and accessories will likely be released until seven years after the launch of the PS5, many games are announced for cross-platform releases like Cyberpunk 2077 and Spiderman Morales this will likely contiune for a a good few years unti the PS5 life span.
Other games are too deep into development cycles and intended for the PS4, or have too much money invested to make a PS5 release possible.
PS5 is the fourth most sold video console of all time, selling more than 111 million copies, making it an incredible success for Sony, it’s why it’s still expensive see my post here for more reasons.
The PS5 infamously had a terrible preorder fiasco where people couldn’t get their consoles on time so a lot of people didn’t have access to PS5, so most developers want to produce titles for the PS4 to ensure their games are accessible to the largest audience possible.
Whilst yes, certain games like Demon Souls are PS5 exclusive big developers will switch over to just producing PS5 titles when more people own a PS5, but smaller third party developers likely will continue publishing games just on the PS4
Even updates, downloadable content and micro transactions will still be added to PS4 games, as certain games still have dedicated fan bases and will still play their PS4 will years before upgrading to new hardware.

History Of Sony Discontinuing Consoles
PlayStation consoles can last a long time, see my post here on if the PS4 is easily damaged. PS2 the most successful gaming console ever selling 157.68 million copies lasted 12 years from 2000 to 2012 before being discontinued.
PS3 released in 2006 lasted 11 years before being discontinued in 2017 it’s servers lasted longing with Sony shutting down in Jan 2019 with will give you hope as a PS4 owner!

Most popular titles will be sold cross generation like Horizon Zero Dawn Forbidden West and Spiderman Miles Morales to appeal to a wide audience, so close to the PS5 lauch there is little incentive to buy a PS5.

Despite the PS5 being an improvement to the PS4 in every single way, the super-fast SSD in particular PS5 likely would not replace the PS4 until around 3 years.
How do I know? Well, I sold my PS4 to someone with an old copy of Fifa 18 and 2 controllers (one broken) on the Facebook marketplace for $168 7 years after the PS4 release! Rest assured your PS4 will not be obsolete for a very long time.
Unlike technology such as laptops or phones gaming consoles have far longer lifespans, the amount of PS4 games still in development and cross platform between PS4 and PS5 being confirmed by Sony should set you at ease, just know the PS4 will be supported for a very long time in the future .
