Is It Normal For A PS4 To Get Hot? (How To Keep It Cool)

Ever worried about how hot your PS4 is? Is it normal for a console to heat up that much? I too wondered the same, so I decided to figure it out once and for all.

It is normal for a PS4 to get hot, all electronics become hot after hours of usage. Sony has designed the PS4to make sure it can handle the heat, with fans to regulate the temperature, the sides of the console drawing in air, and the back expelling the heat.

Stick around if you’d like to find out how to know when if you’re making any of the mistakes causing your PS4 to overheat.

You’ll also learn whether leaving your console on overnight can cause it to overheat, and finally, I’ll show you some ways you can cool down your PS4. Read on to find out.

How do you know if your PS4 is overheating?

If your PS4 overheats, it will beep 3 times, and display a red light on the power button, show a heating error on the screen, and then shut itself off.

When this happens to your PS4, then that’s a definite sign that it is overheating. If the PS4 is hot but continues to work fine and doesn’t display these signs, then it is not overheating.

Will my PS4 overheat If I Leave It On Overnight?

No, the PS4 will not overheat. It should be able to stay turned on overnight without any trouble, but this can depend on the room temperature as well as how much space the console has around it.

Leaving your PS4 on overnight shouldn’t be a problem, unless it already has some hardware issue.

If you want to leave the console on overnight in order to download an update or to keep a game paused, then don’t worry about doing so, as the PS4 is designed to handle these operations even for extended periods of time.

Even Shuhei Yoshida(former Sony SIE President), answering a fan’s question before the console released, said there is no limit to how long a PS4 can run before issues such as overheating arise – just make sure it has space to breathe.

Putting the console into rest mode is also a suitable option if you’re downloading something and/or charging a controller; the game or update will continue to download and the controller will continue to charge even while the console is in rest mode.

To learn more about the PS4 rest mode, and how Sony designed the system with rest mode in mind see my post here.

If you’re playing a game that requires an online connection and don’t want to lose the progress made, then it’s best to leave the PS4 on completely, as putting it in rest mode could lead to losing progress – make sure the console isn’t set to automatically go into rest mode.

To stop the PS4 from automatically going into rest mode after a certain period of inactivity, follow these steps:

How To Turn Off Rest Mode On PS4

  1. Go to [Settings].
  2. Navigate to [Power Save Settings].
  3. Open [Set Time Until PS4 Turns Off]
  4. From here you can choose [Media Playback] (which is for playing videos and songs) and [General (Applications)] – if you don’t want the console to ever turn off, set them both to “Do Not Turn Off”.

How Do I Cool Down My PS4?

Clean up the dust inside the PS4 using a can of compressed air. If you’re worried about damaging your PS4, then it may be best to take it to a service to clean it for you. Buying a PS4 vertical cooling stand and keeping your PS4 ventilated cools it down.

Make sure there’s enough room around the console itself – if it is placed in a really cramped area, then it doesn’t have much room to breathe, causing it to heat up more.

For a guide on how to clean your PS4 and keep it quiet see my post here.

It may be preferable to keep the PS4 in a horizontal position, in order to not block one of the intake vents on the side. If you really want to or have to keep it in a vertical position, then it would be a good idea to get a PS4 or PS4 Slim vertical cooling stand, such as this one from Amazon.

It has 2 cooling fans, extra USB ports, and a charging station for your DualShock 4 controllers. If you have a PS4 Pro, then you may want to check out this one which comes with 3 cooling fans.

Your PS4 is bound to collect dust after a while. It’s important to clean it from time to time as the more dust there is, the harder will it be for the fans to cool the console – it will also begin to sound louder. You could take it to a service to clean it up for you, or you could do it yourself by watching this great video:
