How To Use The PlayStation Store Without A Credit Card

PlayStation is not the best company to keep your credit information safe and the network has been hacked many times, most notoriously in 2011 which you can read more about here.

Also according to this Reddit thread whenever there is a PS4 system update PlayStation will automatically turn your auto-renewal on! If you search this topic you would find this happened to many people.

This is disgusting and honestly, it’s probably illegal, yes you could argue and try to get a refund if this happens but it will cost you valuable time and there’s an easier way to stop it from happening.

There is a way to use the PlayStation Store and get PlayStation Plus without ever needing a credit card! How do you ask? By purchasing prepaid cards!

Yes they might be a little more expensive than using your credit card, but using the cards makes sure PlayStation don’t have your credit card information, so aside from constantly deleting and reentering your credit card info whenever you make a purchase this is the next best option; for Playstation to never charge your card again!

What does Sie mean PlayStation Network charge?

why playstation keeps charging you

If you see SIE charge on your credit/debit card this means you got charged from Sony as SIE stands for Sony Interactive Entertainment and is responsible for the PlayStation brand and family of different products like the PSP & the PlayStation Vita.

So, don’t get scared of a charge from SIE it’s just a charge from PlayStation.

Will PlayStation Refund Your Money?

PlayStation is a notorious company when it comes to issuing refunds, although not quite as bad as Nintendo. I will discuss how PlayStation deals with refunds in all sections from auto-renewal subscription services, games and DLC

PlayStation® Refunds for Games, DLC, Add-ons

Everything from games you buy from the PSN store,DLC, themes avatars and season passes from games like Fortnite/Apex Legends will be under this section.

This is what PlayStation says on their official website

After purchasing this type of content through PlayStation™Store, you have 14 days from purchase to request a refund to your payment method on PlayStation™Network. If you started to download or stream the purchased content you are not eligible for a refund unless the content is faulty.

PlayStation Policy

So unfortunately if you “started to download to stream” the content you purchased “you are not eligible for a refund unless the content is faulty” so even if you accidentally pressed download on a game you bought by accident, Sony will not give you a refund.

This even applies to fighting game character DLC that automatically download to the game. Also, remember you must issue your refund “14 days from purchase” in order to be eligible. Act fast!

So if you purchased your Digital content within 14 days and didn’t accidentally download/stream it follow the following steps

  6. Select a reason on you want a refund such as “it was a mistake”

Under additional info make sure you input the following

Congratulations! PlayStation is processing your refund and it could take 72 hours for them to certify your request, weekends will not count for this time.

I know reading can be long so if you want to see a video walkthrough on how to get a refund on Playstation purchases please look below

PlayStation® Refunds for Pre-ordered Digital Content

Now pre-orders refunds depend on the day the content was preordered

Pre-order purchases more than 14 days before the release date

If you pre-order a game and it’s more than 14 days before the release date you can request a refund at any time until the release date of the content

Pre-order purchases less than 14 days before the release date

Assuming you haven’t downloaded or played the game you can get a refund up to 14 days after the data or purchase but again make sure to never download or stream the pre-ordered game or you won’t be able to get a refund.

PlayStation® Refunds for Subscriptions

Now subscriptions purchased from the PlayStation store with recurring fees include the following PlayStation™Plus, PlayStation™Now or EA Access. This is what PlayStation says

After purchasing a subscription to PlayStation™Plus or PlayStation™Now service you have 14 days to request a refund to your payment method on PlayStation™Network. Free trial periods are in the 14-day refund window.

PlayStation Subscription Refund Policy

For subscription services how much you get refunded depends on how much you used the service. If you buy a PlayStation Plus 12-month membership and request a refund within 7 days your refund amount will reflect that 7 days.

Also everything from downloading monthly games, to playing online, using cloud storage will affect your refund amount Remember this only relates to the 14-day refund window and if you’re on a free trial that counts as the window.

You won’t be able to get any refunds past 14-days and even then your amount depends on how much you used the service, which I don’t think is fair but Sony is Sony.
